FORTS OF SATARA

Satara , A historic district in Maharashtra .Satara district offers a blend of historical sites and natural beauty. It includes -

Kaas plateau - A UNESCO World heritage site & referred as

“Valley OF Flowers”

Thoseghar- This waterfall is the pride of konkan region near satara.

Satara is also famous for its sweet delicacy, the Satara Kandi Pedha. There are various historical forts located in satara district namely, Sajjangad  fort, Ajinkyatara fort and Vairatgad fort.

    

1.Sajjangad fort

Meaning of Sajjangad is “Fort of Good people” It is the final resting place of sant Ramdas. Sajjangad fort is more than just a historical site; it is a place of peace due to its natural beauty.This fort is about 3,300 feet and the Entrance consists of two main gates – Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Darwaza and Delhi Darwaza. Inside Sajjangad fort visitors can also explore the samadhi of Sant Ramdas.Coming towards the trekking of Sajjangad , it involves a moderate trek with well laid steps and takes about 30-40 minutes to reach the top.Near sajjangad fort there is Thoseghar waterfall which is a breathtaking waterfall. 

2. Ajinkyatara fort

Ajinkyatara fort is a historic fort located in satara. It is one of the key fort in the Sahyadri mountain range which is also known as “Fort of Sapta-Rishi”.

It is about 3300 feet above sea level.It is one of the most heritage place in Maharashtra .there are number of water tanks inside the fort for storing water. Visitors can also visit the temples of Devi Mangalai, Lord shankar and Lord Hanuman on the northeast side of the fort.

This place is also famous for hiking,trekking and mountaineering.the best time to visit the fort is from November to February.

The trek of Ajinkyatara is of easy level and hence is recommended for beginner level trekkers .There is also a motorable road that takes visitors directly to the top of fort.

3.Vairatgad fort

   

     

Vairatgad is one of the known fort near wai in satara district. It is about 3340 feet above sea level and is one day hill fort trek. Rainy season is the best time to visit the fort,which monsoon winds and greenery all sides.

Vairatgad offers breathtaking views of wai, the Dhom Dam and the surrounding hills. this fort came under the rule of Shivaji maharaj in the 17th century. The fort played a role in maratha history but is now mostly ruins. On vairatgad Remnants of fortification walls,water tanks and old structures can be seen. Vairatgad is well known for its scenic beauty and trekking opportunities.
